Bigger And Better Than Ever: Polaris Rzr Xp 900

from our friends at atv rider

Testing the new Polaris RZR XP 900 to see what it's made of
January 27, 2011
By Rick Sosebee
Photography by Rick Sosebee

The off-road power sports industry has many new faces and many more new and exciting off-road vehicles for the free at heart. The road to 2011 hasn't been paved with gold for everyone, but a select few seem to have hit the fleeting masses with unforgettable products. A few years back the off-road world was turned upside down with the development and release of the Polaris RZR. The RZR was to be the first true race, sport, purpose-built adventure UTV. This vehicle made it possible for race fans, or just the true adventurer, to conquer their dreams of off-road freedom whether on the tightest trail or at the local race track.

Although there were a couple of players in this market before the RZR came to be, those were more of a working and utilitarian type vehicle with a side of trail worthiness. Starting from the moment in our power sports history in which the team of designers at Polaris released the "epic" ride, many have jumped into the side-by-side and UTV market with success, but it seems for this particular arena Polaris has the stronghold. Even with the Can-Am Commander ripping the trail scene wide open, there was still a size difference that kept the RZR a popular purchase and I believe there will always be.

So where are we going today in 2011 you might ask? Well just a few hours ago, myself and ATV Rider Magazine editor Eli Madero had a chance to see and drive Polaris's answer to the horsepower race that has befell the UTV market. Keeping the same stature and look, the RZR has evolved into what could be the most nimble desert slayer on the market. The newly designed rear trailing arms and front suspension give the feel of a miniature Trophy truck. The power output of the twin cylinder four-stroke has to be the biggest for the vehicle's power-to-weight ratio. A staggering 88HP to the rear wheels on this machine is beyond expectation and the feel of this power output under your foot makes the driver feel as though they are controlling a sprint cup race car.

With a very crisp throttle, the flat-footed riding style of many desert-racing enthusiasts will be quickly satisfied and the suspension just adds to it, multiplying the fun. The front suspension gives up an amazing 13.5 inches of travel and coupled with the Fox piggy back dual rate sprung shocks you can roll the tops of the rutted trails at speed with little effort. The rear trailing arm technology isn't exactly new in the off-road world, but on a side-by-side set up like the RZR XP900 it makes the ride phenomenal. The independent rear suspension has 14 inches of wheel travel. With an overall width of 64 inches coupled to the 4.5-inch longer wheelbase, the machine seems to be very stable in the roughest terrain.

After a few hours behind the wheel of what some would consider a mini trophy truck, Eli and myself had a grin that went from ear to ear. Never before have we driven a SxS machine that had handling and acceleration characteristics similar to an ATV. When you want to unload the front end to charge over whoops that would swallow any other machine, all you needed to do was mash down on the skinny pedal. The cornering characteristics were similar to that of a roller coaster since you could just stay on the gas and turn the wheel in whatever direction you wanted and that is exactly where the machine would take you. Our goal was to push this machine to its limits and I think we were pushed to ours far before we could get close.

Our conclusion is that the new Polaris RZR XP900 is going to be the new king of the SxS market. If you like the information you've gotten from this so far, look for an in-depth ride review in the May/June issue of ATV Rider Magazine and we guarantee that you'll be happy with the results.

Mark Holz In His Can-Am Commander 1000 Wins At 2011 Worcs Opener

Team Motoworks / Can-Am had an excellent opening to its 2011 World Off-Road Championship Series race season as factory driver Mark Holz  piloted his Holz Racing / Motoworks / Can-Am Commander 1000 side-by-side vehicle to the Class 1 victory in front of some of the best side-by-drivers in North America. His teammate, Jeremie Warnia  also too the Pro-class victory on his Can-Am DS 450 ATV completing the weekend sweep of the premier classes by Motoworks / Can-Am.

I’m extremely proud of Mark Holz as he drove excellently this past weekend to earn the Motoworks / Can-Am Commander 1000 a victory at the opener of this highly competitive race series,” said Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “As demonstrated with the DS 450 victory as well, the team’s preparation and testing has definitely paid off and I’m looking forward to many more victories in what will surely be a very exciting season.”

In the side-by-side race, Holz quickly passed for the lead during the first lap and never looked back. At the end of the race, he and his Commander 1000 were nearly two minutes ahead of the nearest competitor; he also had the fastest lap of the race as well. Warnia looked extremely fast in practice and backed it up by passing for the lead on the first lap of the Pro ATV race on his DS 450 and fought off the competition. His teammate and defending champion, Josh Frederick, took third in the Pro class on his DS 450.

Dfr Race Report: Parker 250 & Worcs Round 1

DFR Race Report:
Parker 250 & WORCS Round 1

DragonFire Racing has assembled an incredible race team for 2011.  A strong, talented team of racers continues the strong racing tradition of DFR.  Leading off 2011 is new DFR racer Cory Sappington for DragonFire Racing sponsored teams.

Sappington took his DragonFire sponsored Can Am Commander 1000 to the Best in the Desert Parker 250 race this past weekend. He rocketed out front, displaying the clout of the new Can Am, powered by DFR performance product upgrades, right off the gate.  For over five minutes, Sappington ran in front of the pack; a road blog of fallen dirtbikes caused Sappington's Can Am to veer off the road, resulting in four complete tumbles of the side of the road.  Unfortunately the incident kept Sappington's vehicle to finish the race.

Sappington's next stop is in Baja.  Best of luck to him and his team.

Meanwhile returning team rider, Kyle Melville, makes his way to round 1 of the 2011 WORCS series in Honolulu Hills, Taft California. The race is scheduled for the weekend of January 21st through 23rd.  Melville finished a great sophomore season at 2nd overall.  He looks for his team and RZR to bounce back, hungrier than ever in 2011.

Good luck, Kyle!  DFR is excited to see you push the boundaries with the new DragonFire Racing RZR +6 Long Travel Kit.

PRESS RELEASE: Valcourt, Québec – Last season, Can-Am ATV racers saw their most successful campaign of racing yet. This year, in addition to taking to the tracks on Can-Am ATVs, BRP adds side-by-side vehicle racers to its roster of factory-supported pilots across North America with the introduction of the Can-Am Commander side-by-side vehicle to the racing world.

Warnert Racing will concentrate on bringing the Can-Am DS 450 championships in the XC1 Pro class and the Women’s class for 2011. Returning in the XC1 Pro class is long-time Can-Am racer Chris Bithell, who finished fourth overall last season. This will be his third season with Warnert Racing on the DS 450. In the WORCS series multi-time champion Josh Frederick is back to defend his No.1 plate in the Pro class. He will be joined full time by teammate Dillon Zimmerman. Jeremie Warnia will also race selected WORCS races in the Pro class. All three riders will be on the Can-Am DS 450 ATVs.

His brother, Chase Henry, who won the Four-Stroke B championship, will move to the Production A and Four-Stroke A classes.

Hmf Commander Exhausts

Here at HMF Engineering we were fortunate enough to get one in the shop which is here to stay. With the acquisition of the 2011Can Am 1000 XT package, we immediately went to work. We designed, fabricated, built, tested (and tested again) the signature HMF Swamp Series. After we allowed for some quality HMF staff ride time, we were ready for installation and mapping to begin. We saw huge success in producing horsepower gains beyond expectation. We continued to see torque gains throughout the RPM range, and because we had rode stock through the initial 20 hour break in time, we were ready to tackle the intricate mapping of the fuel optimizer. Can Am definitely was out to break barriers in the side-by-side market with state-of-the-art software never before seen in an off-road beast. This machine is intelligent with software programming options, a limited top speed of 10 mph if the seat belt is not fastened, and three different levels of performance according to three different keys. The off-road game just changed, and Can Am and HMF are leading the way. After successfully producing the Swamp and Swamp XL systems for the 2011 Can Am Commander 1000 XT, we wanted more. We continued to work diligently on a dual-system. We came up with a dual slip-on half-system which allows the driver to still have full access to the industry exclusive dual level cargo box, among the many unique and original features never before seen off-road.
